Cinema enthusiasts, mark your calendars! Visionary director Martin Scorsese has officially announced his next project, a haunting ghost story titled ‘What Happens at Night,’ which will see an incredible pairing of Oscar-winning talent: Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence.
The film is an adaptation of Peter Cameron’s eerie novel and boasts a screenplay penned by the acclaimed Patrick Marber, known for his work on ‘Closer.’ The narrative centers on an American couple who journey to a snow-covered European town with the intention of adopting a child. They find themselves residing in a grand, yet decaying, hotel. Here, they encounter a bizarre array of characters—a captivating chanteuse, a mysterious faith healer, and a morally ambiguous businessman—as their stay progresses, the lines between reality and illusion begin to blur, and their relationship starts to unravel in unsettling ways.
Apple Original Films is reportedly in advanced discussions to finance and produce this intriguing venture, collaborating with Studiocanal, which has been instrumental in developing the script. Filming is expected to commence in early 2026, building anticipation for what promises to be a gripping cinematic experience.
This project marks a significant first for Jennifer Lawrence, as it will be her debut working directly with Scorsese as a director, although the filmmaker has served as a producer on her upcoming film, ‘Die, My Love,’ which recently premiered at Cannes. For Leonardo DiCaprio, ‘What Happens at Night’ is another chapter in his long-standing and highly successful partnership with Scorsese, following their critically acclaimed ‘Killers of the Flower Moon.’
Both lead actors are currently enjoying a busy and celebrated awards season. DiCaprio is earning strong early reviews for his role in Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘One Battle After Another,’ slated for release next week. Lawrence, meanwhile, is set to appear alongside Robert Pattinson in Lynne Ramsay’s ‘Die, My Love.’
‘What Happens at Night’ also signifies the continuation of Scorsese’s fruitful relationship with Apple, who previously supported ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ and hold first-look deals with both Scorsese’s Sikelia Productions and DiCaprio’s Appian Way. The reunion of Scorsese and DiCaprio on a psychological thriller evokes memories of their atmospheric hit ‘Shutter Island,’ fueling high expectations for this latest cinematic endeavor featuring three of Hollywood’s most celebrated talents.
