The film industry is mourning the loss of veteran actor Asrani, who passed away at the age of 84. Hema Malini, his co-star in the legendary film ‘Sholay’, took to her X account to share a heartfelt tribute. Malini, who played the role of Basanti in ‘Sholay’, remembered Asrani for his exceptional talent and comedic timing.
Sharing a throwback picture of herself with the late actor, Hema Malini wrote, “We have lost one more gem of an actor. Asrani ji who has regaled audiences with his superb comedy, is no more. He has done many memorable roles in movies with me but his role as jailor in Sholay was simply mind blowing!”
She further expressed the industry’s grief, mentioning, “The film industry, already in shock with the passing of Pankaj Dheer, now has to contend with one more severe loss. Heartfelt condolences to his family who have to bear this heavy loss.”
Asrani’s manager confirmed his passing, stating that he died at 3 PM at Arogya Nidhi Hospital in Juhu. With a career spanning over five decades, Asrani was known for his impeccable comic timing and appeared in more than 350 films. His portrayal of the jail warden in ‘Sholay’ remains one of his most iconic roles, deeply etched in Indian pop culture. He is survived by his wife, Manju Asrani, his sister, and nephew.
