Heathrow Airport experienced a day of substantial delays on Saturday due to a cyber-attack that disrupted crucial check-in and baggage systems. The issue affected software provided by Collins Aerospace, a subsidiary of RTX, impacting the electronic check-in and baggage drop processes for numerous airlines operating at the airport. While British Airways managed to continue operations using a backup system, most other airlines faced significant disruptions. Passengers reported lengthy queues and manual processing, leading to missed connections and considerable frustration. Brussels Airport and Berlin’s Brandenburg Airport also reported longer waiting times and operational challenges as a result of the cyber incident. The National Cyber Security Centre is working with Collins Aerospace, affected airports, and government departments to assess the full impact of the attack, which has not yet been attributed to any specific perpetrator. This incident highlights the ongoing vulnerabilities within the aviation sector to cyber threats.
