Attention all virtual rockstars! Harmonix has just confirmed that Rock Band 4 will be disappearing from both Xbox and PlayStation digital storefronts this weekend. The reason? Its music licenses are expiring.
This sudden announcement, shared on the game’s official Discord and subreddit, gives fans mere days to react before the game’s 10th anniversary marks this significant change.
Harmonix’s statement reads: “On Sunday, October 5, 2025, Rock Band 4 turns 10. What a ride it’s been.”
The core issue is that the original music licenses for the game’s soundtrack are expiring. Consequently, Rock Band 4 will no longer be available for purchase on digital storefronts. However, if you already own the game, you’re in the clear! You’ll retain full access and can re-download the game and any purchased songs on compatible devices. The same rule applies to Downloadable Content (DLC): individual songs will be delisted as they reach their 10-year expiration, but anything you’ve already bought will remain permanently in your library.
The development team expressed their gratitude: “We’re so grateful for the passion this community has shown. From the team, it’s been a special experience to serve you with Rivals challenges, a super deep DLC library, and a best-in-class band sim. If you’ve been meaning to grab a few last songs, now’s the time.”
Starting this Sunday, both the base Rock Band 4 game and its launch-day DLC will be removed from digital sale. Good news for owners of older titles, though: DLC tracks from previous Rock Band games are not affected by this delisting “yet.” Harmonix plans to address the fate of that legacy content in the coming months.
One of Rock Band‘s standout features has always been its innovative DLC system, which allowed players to carry their vast song libraries and even exported tracklists from older games across three console generations. Since 2007, thousands of custom DLC tracks have been released, with almost all of them compatible with Rock Band 4, creating an unparalleled music game experience.
The final DLC for Rock Band 4 launched in January 2024, concluding an impressive eight years of consistent weekly content. This impending removal of the game and its associated content marks a bittersweet, and somewhat melancholic, chapter in the 18-year history of the beloved rhythm game series.
