Google has recently implemented layoffs within its Cloud division as part of a broader strategy to enhance efficiency. While the exact number of affected employees remains undisclosed, numerous individuals have shared on LinkedIn that their positions have been made redundant.
Among those impacted is a woman on an O-1 visa, who had joined Google only six months prior, following previous tenures at Meta and Apple. An O-1 visa is designated for individuals possessing “extraordinary ability” in their respective fields in the United States, distinguishing them from H-1B visa holders who may work in various specialty occupations.
In a poignant LinkedIn post, the affected employee revealed her precarious situation: “I was unfortunately part of the Google Cloud layoffs yesterday, and it’s sad to be saying goodbye after only 6 months joining a great team. It’s tough knowing many talented colleagues are in the same boat.” She further elaborated on the added challenge of her visa status, stating, “To add more to the challenge, I’m on an O-1 visa, so I have about 60 days to find my next opportunity before I have to make a rather significant international move…”
Her role at Google involved Quantitative User Experience Research (UXR) within Cloud Generative AI & Security. Prior to Google, she contributed to Generative AI modeling at Meta. She concluded her post with an appeal for professional leads: “After I take a moment to absorb this, I’ll be actively seeking roles where I can translate complex data into actionable business insights and help shape the future of human-centered technology. Any leads, connections or just conversations would be appreciated!”
Reports indicate that the layoffs primarily affected employees in user experience roles, including those in design and UX research, with notifications being sent via email.
