Google Explores ‘App Bubbling’ to Revolutionize Multitasking on Android Tablets

Google is reportedly fine-tuning its multitasking capabilities for Android tablets, as hinted by new code found in the latest Android Canary 2510 release. According to a recent report, the company plans to introduce a new feature enabling users to ‘bubble’ apps by simply dragging their icons from the screen’s bottom corner. This updated approach is expected to replace the ‘bubble anything’ feature previously seen in Android 15 QPR1 Beta 2, aiming to deliver a more seamless and intuitive experience for app switching and managing multiple tasks on larger displays.

Google’s New App Bubbling Feature Aims to Boost Multitasking

A report from Android Authority has revealed fresh details about Google’s upcoming multitasking feature, discovered within the Android Canary 2510 release. The code points to a redesigned ‘bubble apps’ system specifically for tablets. Users will be able to drag an app’s icon from a bottom corner of the screen to transform it into a floating window. For first-time users, a helpful tutorial is expected to appear, illustrating how to ‘drag to the bottom corners to make it float,’ complete with an animation demonstrating the gesture from the taskbar.

This development suggests that users could soon launch nearly any Android app within a floating bubble window, leading to a much smoother and more flexible multitasking environment. This would greatly simplify quick app switching and offer enhanced control when managing multiple applications simultaneously on tablets.

While Android already provides robust multitasking options for both phones and tablets, with Google continuously improving the experience through features like the 90:10 split-screen mode, there’s always room for further enhancement. This new bubbling system appears to be Google’s next significant step in making multitasking on Android tablets even more effortless and intuitive.

Currently, Android only supports bubbling for conversations, allowing chat windows to float over other apps for quick access. Extending this functionality to full-fledged applications on tablets seems like a logical progression for Google’s ongoing multitasking efforts.

Although there’s always a possibility of delays or the feature being reconsidered, the presence of a detailed tutorial and animations indicates that it is well into development. Google might release this app bubbling feature for tablets with Android 16’s first Quarterly Platform Release in 2026, or potentially with Android 17.
