Google is enhancing Gmail notifications across both iOS and Android platforms, introducing features designed to make inbox management more intuitive and efficient. A key improvement for Android users is the ability to mark emails as read directly from the notification shade. Previously, Android notifications for Gmail were limited to quick actions like deleting or replying. However, after a period of testing where some users spotted a new Mark as read shortcut, this highly anticipated functionality is now rolling out widely, offering a more streamlined approach to handling your daily emails.
Introducing the Handy ‘Mark as Read’ Feature for Gmail Mobile Users
Confirming the update in a recent post on Google’s Workspace, the company stated that the new Mark as read option is becoming available to Gmail for Android users globally. If you haven’t seen it yet, don’t worry—it should appear on your device within the next few weeks as the rollout progresses.
Everyone manages their inbox differently. For those who meticulously archive or delete every message, this new Gmail option might not drastically change their routine. However, for individuals who tend to let emails accumulate but still desire a quick and easy way to differentiate between read and unread messages, this feature provides a highly practical solution for more efficient notification management.
Should a notification not provide enough detail, you always have the option to open the full email and mark it as read from there. But for swift responses or simply clearing out less important conversations, this new one-tap action is a very welcome addition.
Beyond Android, Gmail has also updated its iOS app to support displaying sender avatars directly on email notifications. This means you’ll now see the sender’s profile picture alongside their emails, making it significantly easier to recognize important contacts and quickly prioritize which messages require your immediate attention.
These notification improvements arrive alongside other recent Gmail enhancements focused on shopping. A new “Purchases” section centralizes all order-related emails and delivery updates, complete with an “Arriving Soon” row for easy tracking of upcoming shipments. This section is accessible under “All labels” on Android, iOS, and the web, and includes handy summary cards for your orders. Additionally, the “Promotions” tab has been upgraded with a “Most relevant” sorting option to highlight deals from brands you interact with most frequently, along with gentle nudges for timely offers.
