A widespread incident at Amazon Web Services (AWS) on Monday triggered extensive issues across its cloud service operations. This massive disruption resulted in hundreds of popular websites and mobile applications, including those essential for gaming and entertainment, reporting outages and severe service interruptions.
Amazon’s engineering teams are working tirelessly to mitigate the impact and identify the precise cause of the problem. The company confirmed that 28 of its critical services, particularly those located in its key “US-EAST-1” region, were experiencing difficulties.
The internet outage tracking website DownDetector rapidly registered a surge in reports, highlighting issues with dozens of prominent online platforms. Among the affected were giants like Amazon’s retail platform, financial service providers such as Venmo and Coinbase, popular streaming service Hulu, and even major brands like McDonald’s.
Several impacted companies directly attributed their service interruptions to the AWS outage. Coinbase, a leading cryptocurrency platform, publicly stated that many users were unable to access their services due to the AWS incident, reassuring customers that all funds remained secure while their team worked on a fix.
The artificial intelligence startup Perplexity also confirmed it was experiencing an outage, with its chief executive, Aravind Srinivas, pinpointing an AWS issue as the “root cause” and affirming efforts to resolve it.
Further emphasizing the scale of the problem, Meredith Whittaker, the chief executive of the secure messaging app Signal, informed users via social media that Signal was down for some individuals, noting that this appeared to be directly related to the major AWS disruption.
