A significant portion of a bustling Bangkok road unexpectedly collapsed on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, carving out a gigantic sinkhole. This sudden event has thrown the city into disarray, causing considerable traffic disruptions, damaging crucial infrastructure, and prompting urgent evacuations in the surrounding area.
Thankfully, no casualties have been reported, though three vehicles suffered damage due to the collapse. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt indicated that initial assessments point to the ongoing construction of an underground train station as the likely culprit behind the road’s failure.
Dramatic videos captured the terrifying moments as the road surface slowly gave way, pulling down several electricity poles and rupturing water pipes. Cars in the vicinity frantically attempted to reverse as the chasm rapidly expanded, completely severing the four-lane thoroughfare. The gaping maw of the sinkhole came to a halt directly in front of a police station, revealing its subterranean foundations.
In response to the incident, a nearby hospital announced a two-day closure of its outpatient services. While Bangkok city officials confirmed that the hospital’s main structure remained unaffected, residents and personnel from the adjacent police station and other buildings were immediately ordered to evacuate as a precautionary measure.
As recovery efforts get underway, authorities have also disconnected electricity and water supplies to the affected zone. Governor Chadchart emphasized that relevant agencies are working tirelessly to repair the immense hole as swiftly as possible, especially with the current monsoon season raising fears that heavy rainfall could exacerbate the damage and further complicate the situation.
