The vibrant boxing scene in Ghana has been brought to a standstill following the devastating loss of Ernest Akushey, also known as Bahubali, who passed away at the age of 32. Akushey’s death, which occurred on Tuesday, came just 11 days after his bout at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra against Jacob Dickson on September 12th. While the official cause of death is still under investigation, early indications point towards potential internal injuries sustained during his last fight.
In response to this tragic event, the National Sports Authority has implemented a nationwide suspension of all boxing activities. A spokesperson described this measure as a crucial step to “protect lives, uphold the integrity of the sport and ensure its future.” The authority is also set to roll out a comprehensive five-year plan aimed at elevating boxing standards in Ghana to be safer, more professional, and in line with international best practices.
This unfortunate incident is the second boxing-related fatality in Ghana within a six-month period. It highlights growing concerns about fighter safety and the necessary measures needed to protect athletes. The sport, which is incredibly popular in Ghana and has a rich history of producing world-class champions like Azumah Nelson, now faces a critical moment of reflection and reform.
