Frostpunk 2 presents a harsh reality: surviving a relentless winter 30 years after a devastating blizzard. Players must constantly balance scarce resources and navigate complex social dynamics. However, some incredibly dedicated city builders have taken on this challenge with such ambition that they’ve managed to create settlements far beyond what the developers at 11 bit studios thought possible, leading to an emergency fix.
“Starting from the very first day of our Frostpunk 2 journey, we were stunned by the size of some of your Utopia Builder creations, which sometimes felt to us as not achievable during a regular playthrough,” the studio announced in the patch notes for Frostpunk 2 hotfix 1.4.2. The game’s sandbox mode, which removes time limits, has allowed players to push their settlements to unprecedented scales, exploring deep social and infrastructural challenges.
This impressive growth, while a sight to behold, occasionally led to significant problems. Players reported that their painstakingly crafted save files wouldn’t load, or the game would simply crash. The error message typically indicated, “Maximum number of UObjects exceeded when trying to add object(s).” This essentially means the game engine reached its capacity for handling in-world objects, causing a complete shutdown.
A video providing more context on the game’s development and challenges was previously shared by the developers.
After much internal discussion, the team decided to offer a specific, manual workaround for this issue, alongside their ongoing optimization efforts. Developers caution that this method is intended strictly as a last resort for users experiencing this precise crash, and only for those with high-end gaming PCs capable of handling the increased load.
The solution involves adding two specific lines of text to a particular game configuration file. 11 bit studios explicitly states that Frostpunk 2 was not originally designed or optimized for such extreme conditions. Therefore, players attempting this fix must closely monitor their PC’s memory during gameplay and should only apply the change if they are specifically encountering the “Maximum UObjects exceeded” crash.
The Frostpunk 2 hotfix 1.4.2 is available now and also addresses several other issues. These include fixes for economy overlays not responding to inputs, missing tooltips, and problems with the startup of chapter five.
It’s truly remarkable how players can push game systems beyond their intended limits, revealing both the creativity of the community and unexpected development challenges.
