Years ago, as a university student, I delved into the complexities of L.A. Noire for my dissertation. While my research focused on the game’s depiction of PTSD in 1940s America, it was the unforgettable ending that truly captivated me. Many, myself included, found protagonist Cole Phelps to be an arrogant and difficult character. Yet, the powerful conclusion of his story resonated deeply due to his compelling portrayal. This very essence of high-stakes, shocking narrative is masterfully woven throughout Expedition 33, hailed as one of the year’s standout RPGs. However, this game takes an even bolder step, delivering its most emotionally impactful surprise right at the beginning.
A word of caution: this article contains significant spoilers for both Expedition 33 and L.A. Noire. Proceed with care, fellow adventurers.
Gustave stands in stark contrast to Phelps. From his very first appearance, players are drawn to him. He’s charming, inspiring, and possesses an undeniable natural leadership – his portrayal by Daredevil star Charlie Cox certainly enhances this appeal. He is presented as the central figure; the formidable pioneer destined to break the Paintress’ hold on the world. He embodies heroism in every sense.
Then, unexpectedly, he vanishes. A sudden shot in the dark, a fleeting spark: Gustave is no more. Similar to Phelps’ fate, swept away by a furious current, Gustave’s end is both heroic and abrupt, devoid of prolonged battles or agonizing final moments.
However, unlike Cole, whose general arrogance might have prompted some to cheer his departure, Gustave was universally beloved – a sentiment shared by the team at Sandfall. I inquired with CEO and creative director Guillaume Broche and COO and producer Francois Meurisse whether eliminating Gustave so early in the game was a calculated risk, and if they felt it ultimately succeeded.
“Certainly, there’s an inherent risk in such a decision, but if a small team like ours isn’t willing to take chances, then who will?” Broche chuckled. “From the very outset, our core philosophy has been to challenge conventions. We believe playing it safe is not only against our artistic vision but also inherently uninteresting. To truly make an impact in any creative field, taking risks is essential; otherwise, you simply become another face in the crowd.”
He elaborated, “I often feel that, particularly in storytelling, video games tend to be overly cautious. This presented us with a prime opportunity to distinguish ourselves. Gustave’s death, when viewed within the context of the game’s world, feels incredibly natural. It’s designed to evoke a profound sense of loss – you’ve lost a character vital to the narrative, someone who was guiding the entire Expedition, and by extension, your own journey as a player. This sudden void creates confusion, disorientation, and a deep sense of grief, all of which are crucial for forging a stronger connection with the remaining cast.”
“We are incredibly pleased with the impact it had on players and the strong attachment they developed for Gustave,” he shared. “He was a delight to create and animate. He’s not only incredibly endearing but also possesses a rich, human complexity.”
“We didn’t overly concern ourselves with the possibility of losing players due to Gustave’s death; if it happened, it happened,” Broche added. “However, we did implement specific gameplay decisions. We ensured that player progress wasn’t entirely lost, transferring it to Verso, despite his distinct personality. This pivotal moment also occurs sufficiently late for players to form a strong bond with Gustave, yet early enough to still offer ample content and time to develop a connection with Verso.”
“Striking the right balance was key, but our primary goal was to ensure Gustave’s death delivered a powerful, visceral impact, like a ‘punch to the gut’ for players,” he stated. “We’re happy that it worked well for the players – though some still harbor a fond resentment towards us for it! Sometimes, that ‘good hate’ is a sign of success.”
“When one falls, we continue,” Meurisse succinctly summarized, leaving little else to add.
For those still venturing through Expedition 33, exciting news awaits: a substantial update is slated for release “in the coming months.” Should you find yourself challenged by formidable foes, fear not; resources are available featuring the finest Expedition 33 weapons and optimal Expedition 33 builds to aid you in your journey.
