ESPN and other Disney networks are facing widespread boycott calls on social media. This backlash comes after YouTube TV announced that it could not reach a new licensing deal with Disney. As a result, Disney’s channels, including ESPN, ABC, Disney Channel, FX, National Geographic, and Freeform, will no longer be available on the Google-owned platform.
YouTube TV stated on X (formerly Twitter) that their contract with Disney had reached its renewal date, and they could not agree to terms that would disadvantage their members. A spokesperson for Disney expressed disappointment, saying, “Unfortunately, Google’s YouTube TV has chosen to deny their subscribers the content they value most by refusing to pay fair rates for our channels, including ESPN and ABC.”
The absence of these channels means YouTube TV subscribers will miss out on a significant amount of live sports programming, featuring major leagues like the NFL, NBA, and college football. Many subscribers have voiced their anger on social media, with some expressing frustration about not being able to access the ESPN app through their YouTube TV subscription, calling it “bullshit” and suggesting ESPN values money over its customers.
It’s worth noting that YouTube TV has successfully negotiated deals with other major networks, such as NBCUniversal, Fox, and Paramount, ensuring their content remains accessible. However, Disney’s claim suggests that Google is leveraging its market dominance to eliminate competition and dictate unfavorable terms.
