This week, a significant new chapter unfolded in The Elder Scrolls Online. For the first time ever, the game introduced a multi-week, server-versus-server community event: the Writhing Wall. Players are now racing to breach this mysterious barrier, eager to uncover the secrets and treasures of Eastern Solstice and the new Update 48 content that lies beyond. This ambitious undertaking marks a “shift in mentality” for Zenimax Online Studios, as explained by ESO‘s associate design director, Mike Finnigan. Despite some initial lukewarm feedback from veteran players regarding the Writhing Wall, Finnigan assures that this event is not a definitive blueprint for all future content. Instead, it’s merely the inaugural step in a series of “big swings” ZOS plans to take, aiming to keep its dedicated player base consistently engaged and surprised.
The Writhing Wall was certainly touted as a pivotal moment in The Elder Scrolls Online’s timeline. Its initial phase, live since October 13, is accessible to everyone, even those without the 2025 Content Pass. However, the heavy reliance on repetitive daily tasks in this opening phase has sparked considerable criticism.
Many players on social media have expressed disappointment, feeling that an event promising novelty ultimately delivered a familiar grind. While phases two and three are expected to introduce more substantial and challenging content, especially for Content Pass holders, there’s still a chance for the Writhing Wall event to find its footing. Yet, my conversation with Finnigan suggests that even if this particular event doesn’t fully resonate, it doesn’t represent a permanent shift in ESO’s content delivery model.
Finnigan emphasized, “I want to highlight the Writhing Wall event as a harbinger, a first glimpse of what’s on the horizon. This should reassure players that we are eager to experiment with fresh ideas and embark on significant new ventures that truly challenge the game’s existing boundaries. While there’s inherent risk in such endeavors, we have immense faith in our players and our commitment to providing them with the experiences they desire.”
He also made it clear that player feedback is crucial, stressing his eagerness to gather as much input as possible. This, he explained, will allow future innovations to build upon the successes and learn from the challenges of the new event.
Considering Zenimax Online Studios sees the Writhing Wall as a pivotal moment for future content, I recalled a previous discussion with studio game director Rich Lambert, who shared his vision for ESO to become a “30-year MMO.” With the game already a significant way there, I queried Finnigan on his predictions for the evolving MMO landscape over the next two decades and how ESO plans to adapt.
“I’ve been involved in MMO development for roughly 23 or 24 years, and the genre has transformed considerably in that time,” he reflected. “So, predicting its exact trajectory is difficult. However, I believe MMOs will continue to draw inspiration from other forms of entertainment, constantly finding innovative ways to bring players together.”
“A core principle for ESO’s continued success, and a direction we’re firmly committed to for the future, is avoiding predictability. We aim to move beyond a formulaic approach where players can anticipate ‘this part, then an event, then the next part.’ We’re challenging that mindset. Our goal is to excite players, to encourage them to think, and to embrace variety. I believe variety truly is the spice of life, and that will be key to ESO’s enduring appeal.”
Therefore, if the Writhing Wall event isn’t quite hitting the mark for you currently, there’s no need to fear it becoming the definitive model for ESO’s future. It appears Zenimax Online Studios is set to deliver even more experimental and engaging experiences. Hopefully, their next innovative endeavor avoids starting with a familiar daily quest grind.
Despite recent setbacks, ESO continues to be a highly recommended fantasy game, especially if you’re prepared to invest time and gather some companions. If you’re looking for more shared adventures, there are numerous other fantastic co-op games available where you can team up with friends.
For those participating in the Writhing Wall, feel free to share your thoughts on the event within the community discussion spaces.
