The highly anticipated Viking-themed survival game, Valheim, is officially making its way to PlayStation consoles in 2026! This announcement from developer Iron Gate comes five years after the game first entered early access on Steam and three years after its debut on Xbox platforms.
While an exact release date within 2026 for its PlayStation arrival hasn’t been revealed yet, Iron Gate co-founder Henrik Törnqvist expressed immense excitement in a recent press release. He stated that the studio is eagerly looking forward to introducing Valheim to an even broader audience.
A recent video showcasing the game highlights the immersive world and challenging survival elements Valheim has to offer.
Törnqvist emphasized their excitement, stating, “Bringing both new and longtime players to a new platform allows even more people to explore the world we’ve worked so hard to build, and we can’t wait to hear their stories as they’re able to dive into their Viking adventures.”
This immensely popular survival game from Iron Gate quickly became a sensation, selling over a million copies within its first week on Steam. Its success continued, pushing total sales past the 12 million mark. Currently, players can enjoy cross-play between Xbox and PC, with the game also being an Xbox “Play Anywhere” title. This means a single purchase grants access across Xbox consoles and PC via the Microsoft Store. However, details regarding whether the PlayStation version will support cross-platform play with other systems are still unknown.
Despite its impressive success, Valheim remains in early access, having received numerous significant updates over the past four years. These additions include expansive new biomes such as the mysterious Mistlands and the fiery Ashlands. The most recent “Call To Arms” update dramatically overhauled the game’s combat mechanics and introduced new equippable items called trinkets. This update also enriched the game with fresh enemies, weapons, armor sets, building components, and expanded character customization. Development is ongoing, with yet another biome, the “Deep North,” still in the works.
According to Iron Gate’s early access information, the studio plans for Valheim to officially exit early access once the “Deep North” biome is fully integrated. They’ve also indicated that the game’s price may see an increase as development progresses through this early access phase.
If you’re still on the fence about diving into Valheim, consider this: it’s consistently ranked among top indie games and holds a spot as one of the most popular titles on Steam by concurrent player count, proving its enduring appeal and quality.
