After an incredible 14-year odyssey, YouTube and Twitch streamer Kurt ‘Kurtjmac’ Mac has finally achieved his legendary ‘Far Lands or Bust’ goal in Minecraft. Starting in March 2011, Mac embarked on an ambitious quest to reach the game’s Far Lands, a glitched region where terrain generation breaks down at the extreme edges of the map. His epic trek culminated on October 4, marking the end of a truly monumental in-game journey.
For those unfamiliar, the Minecraft Far Lands refers to a fascinating in-game glitch. This phenomenon would occur over 12.5 million blocks away from the world’s spawn point, causing the terrain generation algorithm to malfunction and create chaotic, broken landscapes. Interestingly, this error was patched out of the game many years ago by Mojang. To complete his quest, Kurtjmac had to continue his entire journey on an older version of Minecraft, specifically the beta 1.7.3 build.
During a previous check-in with Mac in 2021, on the tenth anniversary of his journey, he shared that his quest began as a spontaneous decision. He admitted he initially had no idea of the immense distance, time, and effort it would demand. As his series gained popularity, he was inspired by charity events like Zeldathon and Desert Bus for Hope, transforming his personal challenge into a successful fundraiser.
Throughout his extensive adventure, Kurtjmac has consistently raised funds for various charitable organizations, including Child’s Play, Direct Relief, PAWS, and the Equal Justice Initiative. You can experience the climactic moment yourself when he and his trusty companion, Wolfie, finally navigate a vast ocean stretch to witness the bizarre, glitchy landscape of the Far Lands appearing before them. His excited exclamation, “Oh! That’s a very big ocean,” perfectly captures the surreal completion of his endeavor.
Upon reaching his monumental destination, Mac commemorated the achievement by placing a sign that read: “Here Farlanders first set foot upon Far Lands! October 4, 2025.” This epic marathon was originally undertaken as a direct challenge to Minecraft’s creator, Markus ‘Notch’ Persson, who had once declared such a journey to be impossible. Now, after countless blocks and years, the impossible has been achieved.
While reaching the classic Far Lands glitch is no longer possible in modern Minecraft versions, players can still explore incredible landscapes using the best Minecraft seeds. For those looking to add unique features and spice up their gameplay, a variety of fantastic Minecraft mods are also available.
