In a peculiar move that highlights the growing anticipation for Yorgos Lanthimos’s latest film, ‘Bugonia,’ fans are undergoing a drastic transformation: shaving their heads. The absurdist sci-fi comedy, which stars Emma Stone, has a unique admission requirement for select early screenings – attendees must be bald.
Distributor Focus Features issued the unconventional challenge, prompting fans to shave their heads to secure a ticket to see the film before its official release. This initiative has particularly resonated with the fanbase of Emma Stone and director Yorgos Lanthimos, who previously collaborated on the acclaimed films ‘Poor Things’ and ‘The Favourite.’
The film is set to premiere in select theaters this Friday, with a wider release across the US on October 31. In ‘Bugonia,’ Stone portrays Michelle Fuller, a powerful pharmaceutical CEO who becomes the target of two conspiracy theorists. Convinced she is an alien, they famously shave her head as part of their elaborate plot.
The commitment from fans was evident, with many embracing the opportunity for a new look to experience the film. Sam Sherman from Los Angeles shared his enthusiasm, stating, “I was already thinking of shaving my head. I saw, like, a post about this and I was like, that’s a perfect excuse… and I get a free haircut and a free movie. It’s hard to say no to that.”
Matthew Lopez, another attendee, described the experience as immersive, feeling a connection to the story by participating in the unconventional screening ritual. Richard Chong also saw it as a fun way to appease his friends and wife, who apparently disliked his bowl cut.
This creative marketing strategy has certainly generated significant buzz, turning a movie screening into a memorable, and notably bold, cultural moment.
