The highly anticipated film “One Battle After Another” is hitting theaters this Friday, but you can already secure your copy on 4K Blu-ray! Walmart briefly offered a Limited Edition Steelbook for $44.25, which appears to be sold out or temporarily unavailable, likely due to an early listing. However, the standard 4K Blu-ray edition is still available for $37. We’ll keep an eye out for when preorders become available elsewhere, especially for the coveted Steelbook edition.
This 4K Blu-ray release promises a stunning viewing experience with HDR10 support and immersive Dolby Atmos and Dolby TrueHD 7.1 surround sound. While specific special features and official artwork are still under wraps, we know of four distinct editions: the Limited Edition Steelbook ($44.25), the standard 4K Blu-ray ($37), a 1080p Blu-ray ($33), and a DVD ($30). Both 4K Blu-ray versions include both 4K and 1080p discs, plus a digital copy, while the standard Blu-ray also comes with a digital edition.
Helmed by the acclaimed Paul Thomas Anderson, “One Battle After Another” boasts an incredible ensemble cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, Regina Hall, Chase Infiniti, and Teyana Taylor. Early buzz suggests this 162-minute action thriller, blended with dark comedy, is a strong contender for next year’s major awards, currently holding an impressive 98% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. DiCaprio delivers a compelling performance as Bob Ferguson/Pat Calhoun, a former revolutionary now haunted by paranoia due to substance abuse, who must confront his sworn enemy, Col. Steven J. Lockjaw (Sean Penn), to rescue his daughter, Willa.
This film draws inspiration from Thomas Pynchon’s 1990 novel, “Vineland,” adopting its core premise and certain plot elements rather than being a direct adaptation. Anderson previously tackled Pynchon’s work with the 2014 film “Inherent Vice,” a more faithful adaptation of the author’s 2009 novel. Interestingly, “Inherent Vice” is only available on standard Blu-ray, not 4K, but it remains an affordable option. Given Pynchon’s famously reclusive nature, it’s unlikely we’ll hear his personal thoughts on “One Battle After Another.”
For those eager to delve into the source material, Thomas Pynchon’s “Vineland” is available in paperback for $21.
Pynchon enthusiasts have even more to celebrate! Not only can they look forward to Anderson’s latest film inspired by “Vineland,” but a brand new novel from the legendary, albeit reclusive, author is also on the horizon. “Shadow Ticket,” Pynchon’s first novel since 2013’s “Bleeding Edge” (often considered his most adaptable work), is slated for release on October 7.
To celebrate this new release and upcoming novel, we’ve compiled a chronological list of Paul Thomas Anderson’s feature films available on Blu-ray and 4K, followed by a comprehensive list of Thomas Pynchon’s novels for those looking to explore his literary universe.
