Digital Hearts and AI Companions: Why US Students Are Seeking Emotional and Romantic Connections with AI

October 14, 2025

Reading Time: 4 min

The landscape of relationships is rapidly evolving, with emotional support, companionship, and even romance now extending beyond human interaction. A rising number of American students are openly embracing artificial intelligence for their emotional needs and personal connections. AI chatbots and advanced tools are subtly weaving themselves into students’ lives, influencing how they engage, trust, and manage their feelings.

A recent eye-opening survey by the Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT) uncovered a significant trend: nearly one in five high school students reported being in a romantic relationship with AI. Furthermore, the study revealed that a substantial 42 percent of students, or someone they know, have turned to AI for simple companionship. This marks a profound transformation in the emotional world of K-12 students, as AI begins to fill roles traditionally held by family, friends, and trusted advisors.

AI Confidants and Digital Romance: US Students and AI Connections

How Students Are Engaging with AI

The CDT survey, which gathered insights from approximately 800 public school teachers (grades 6-12), 1,000 high school students (grades 9-12), and 1,000 parents, provides a comprehensive look at the diverse ways AI is influencing students’ personal lives. During the 2024-25 school year, students or their friends reported utilizing AI for various purposes:

  • For mental health support: 42%
  • As a friend or companion: 42%
  • To have a romantic relationship: 19%
  • To escape from real life: 42%

These compelling statistics clearly show that AI is far more than just an academic tool; it’s rapidly becoming a vital source of emotional connection and a platform for personal exploration among young people.

AI: The New Best Friend?

For many students, AI is stepping into the role of a trusted confidant, providing a safe and non-judgmental space to articulate their thoughts, feelings, and everyday experiences. The Center for Democracy & Technology reports that 42 percent of students used AI as a friend or conversational partner during the 2024-25 school year. For these young individuals, AI offers a consistent and readily accessible presence, acting as an attentive listener without criticism, and fulfilling a fundamental need to be heard, especially when human connection feels distant or intimidating.

Navigating Digital Romance with AI

Perhaps the most astonishing revelation from the CDT survey is that nearly 19 percent of high school students disclosed being in a romantic relationship with an AI during the 2024-25 school year. For some, AI offers a unique sense of intimacy, emotional bond, and undivided attention that might be challenging to find in human interactions. These AI “romantic partners” can deliver instant responses, recall intricate personal details, and provide validation or affection on demand.

However, this burgeoning trend raises important ethical and psychological questions, particularly concerning students’ grasp of consent, personal boundaries, and the inherent complexities of genuine human romance. Algorithmic interactions, by their very nature, cannot replicate the profound emotional depth or mutual accountability that are cornerstones of authentic, real-life relationships.

The Hidden Risks of Over-Reliance on AI

While AI undoubtedly offers benefits as a friend and companion, an excessive reliance on these digital entities carries substantial risks. Students risk developing emotional dependency on machines, potentially stifling the development of essential real-world social and relational skills. A significant concern is the widespread unawareness among teachers and parents regarding the extent of students’ AI engagement, leading to a critical void in guidance and oversight.

Moreover, AI’s algorithmic responses, while often comforting, lack genuine empathy and critical judgment, meaning students may receive advice that is superficially reassuring but devoid of deeper insight. Such dependence could ultimately erode authentic human connections and impede healthy emotional growth, positioning virtual relationships as a limited and potentially detrimental substitute for true interpersonal interaction.
