Diddy’s Day in Court: Live Coverage of Sean Combs’ Sentencing in Prostitution Case

Reading Time: 4 min

Hip-hop icon Sean “Diddy” Combs appeared in federal court in Manhattan for his sentencing on prostitution-related charges. This event follows an eight-week trial that resulted in a split verdict: Mr. Combs, 55, was acquitted of sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy, which could have led to a life sentence. However, he was convicted on two prostitution-related charges, each carrying a maximum sentence of 10 years. The defense is seeking less than 14 months of imprisonment, while the prosecution is pushing for over 11 years.

What to Expect Today:

  • Arguments: Both the defense and prosecution will present their arguments to Judge Arun Subramanian regarding the length of Mr. Combs’ sentence.
  • Combs to Speak: His lawyers have indicated that Mr. Combs will address the judge in open court. He previously sent a letter requesting mercy and vowing to never commit a crime again. An 11-minute video is also planned for presentation.
  • The Charges: Mr. Combs was convicted of two counts under the Mann Act, which prohibits transporting individuals across state lines for prostitution. This included two women, Casandra Ventura (known as Cassie) and another former girlfriend (Jane), as well as male escorts hired by Mr. Combs, who allegedly engaged in sexual acts with the women.
  • Cassie’s Impact Statement: Ms. Ventura submitted a letter to the court, urging the judge to consider “the many lives that Sean Combs has upended with his abuse and control” when determining his punishment.
  • The Judge: Judge Arun Subramanian, appointed by President Joseph R. Biden Jr., has served on the bench for two and a half years and is the first judge of South Asian heritage in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.
  • Combs’ Time in Jail: Since his September 2024 arrest, Mr. Combs has been held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. His lawyers describe it as a “punitive” environment, despite recent improvements by the Bureau of Prisons, where he has reportedly gotten sober, undergone psychological treatment, and even developed a self-help course for fellow inmates.

In a recent development, Judge Arun Subramanian addressed crucial aspects of the sentencing, including whether to consider the broader evidence of Sean Combs’s conduct, such as trial testimonies of violence. Despite a federal sentencing rule limiting the consideration of “acquitted conduct,” the judge stated he could still factor such evidence into his final decision. This is a significant setback for Mr. Combs, whose legal team had aimed for a sentence focused solely on the prostitution convictions. The prosecution also announced that Mia, a former assistant who accused Combs of sexual assault, would not testify, citing a defense letter they called “bullying” that questioned her credibility.

The courtroom atmosphere is tense. Sean Combs entered, appearing somber as he greeted his family and lawyers. His mother, Janice Combs, and his six adult children are present, having submitted letters advocating for his release. They emphasize his changed character, stating that he is desperate to leave the challenging conditions of jail, where he has abstained from alcohol and drugs, and even mentored other inmates.

This case hinges on the Mann Act, a 1910 anti-prostitution law. Historically used to combat “white slavery” and other “immoral purposes,” the law has evolved to address sex crimes and trafficking. Mr. Combs’ lawyers argue its application to consensual adult sex in this case is outdated, but Judge Subramanian maintains its race-neutral enforcement. This legal debate is expected to form a basis for an appeal.

Sean “Diddy” Combs, once a celebrated hip-hop producer and entrepreneur behind acts like The Notorious B.I.G. and Mary J. Blige, built a vast business empire. However, his career has also been marred by allegations of violence and misconduct, including a fatal stampede at a charity event, an assault on a photographer, and a nightclub shooting. While he largely avoided major consequences for these past incidents, his reputation significantly declined after former girlfriend Cassie accused him of sexual assault and abuse in late 2023. Her lawsuit, which detailed “freak-offs,” led to a federal investigation and his arrest on sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy charges. Although acquitted of the more serious charges, his conviction under the Mann Act marks a stark shift for the music mogul.
