The Coffee Board is actively rolling out comprehensive awareness and training programs designed to increase the number of coffee growers registered on its mobile application for EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) compliance. This important initiative was announced by Kurma Rao, the Board’s CEO and Secretary, emphasizing a proactive approach to upcoming trade challenges.
Set to take effect for large exporters on December 30, the EUDR is a critical new rule requiring verifiable proof that imported coffee has not contributed to deforestation since December 31, 2020. Small-scale growers will have a bit more time to prepare, with the regulation applying to them from June 30 next year.
To facilitate this transition, the Coffee Board’s mobile application provides an easy-to-use platform for both exporters and individual growers to register and submit essential geo-location data for their coffee cultivation areas.
Recognizing the significant scale of the task, the Board is collaborating extensively with various associations and industry stakeholders to boost overall awareness. While India boasts approximately 4.41 lakh coffee growers, currently only about 9,000 have completed their EUDR compliance registrations through the app, indicating a substantial need for further outreach and support.
Despite these new regulatory hurdles, India’s coffee exports are thriving. For the fourth consecutive year, exports for 2024-2025 have impressively surpassed the $1 billion mark, reaching an impressive $1,803 million. This positive trend also includes a modest increase in the actual volume of coffee shipped.
Domestically, the Board is focusing intently on improving per capita coffee consumption. As part of these efforts, a nationwide ‘Walk With Coffee’ event is planned for International Coffee Day on October 1, aiming to celebrate and further embed coffee culture across the country.
