Chinese scientists have developed a remarkable ‘ghostlike’ jellyfish robot, designed to operate with exceptional stealth in underwater environments. This cutting-edge creation, affectionately dubbed an “underwater phantom,” was developed by Tao Kai from Northwestern Polytechnical University’s School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering in Xian, Shaanxi province.
According to reports, the robot’s design makes it nearly indistinguishable from a real jellyfish when submerged. This unique characteristic allows it to conduct underwater monitoring without causing any disturbance to marine life, a significant advancement in aquatic observation technology.
Ghostlike Jellyfish for Surveillance:
Constructed from a hydrogel electrode material, the robot features a transparent body shaped like a jellyfish umbrella with delicate tentacles. Measuring a mere 120mm (4.7 inches) in diameter and weighing just 56 grams (two ounces), it is powered by an electrostatic hydraulic actuator. This innovative system mimics the natural muscle contractions of a jellyfish, enabling quiet and efficient movement. Consuming only 28.5 milliwatts of power, it generates minimal sound and physical disruption, facilitating long-term underwater operations.
The bionic jellyfish made an appearance on a state broadcaster CCTV science program in August, alongside other bio-inspired robots like a robotic bird, gecko, and fish. During demonstrations, Tao showcased its ability to hover steadily in currents and accurately identify specific targets, such as a school emblem and clownfish. This highlights the robot’s capacity for autonomous environmental sensing and target recognition.
The technology could significantly aid in observing and tracking fish populations without interference. Equipped with a miniature camera and an AI chip, the robot utilizes machine learning to precisely identify underwater targets. These advancements underscore the growing trend of scientists drawing inspiration from nature to create sophisticated machines capable of operating discreetly and effectively in complex aquatic settings.
