OpenAI is addressing a common frustration among ChatGPT users with a significant new update. Since the introduction of GPT-5 and its advanced reasoning component, GPT-5 Thinking, many users have noted that the chatbot often takes an extended period to respond to even straightforward questions. Previously, users relied on an automatic system that decided when the AI chatbot would engage its reasoning mode versus providing instant answers. This latest update grants users greater autonomy over ChatGPT’s processing duration.
Introducing ChatGPT’s Thinking Duration Control
The official OpenAI account announced this new capability via a post on social media, emphasizing that it was developed in response to widespread user feedback requesting more control over ChatGPT’s thinking time before generating a response.
To tackle this, OpenAI has implemented a new toggle specifically for GPT-5 Thinking. When users opt for this model, a ‘Thinking’ option will appear beneath the prompt bar. This feature offers four distinct settings: Light, Standard, Extended, and Heavy. ‘Light’ provides the quickest responses, while ‘Heavy’ allows for the longest processing time, enabling more in-depth thought.
However, there are a few limitations to this new functionality. It is not available to users on the free or ChatGPT Go subscription tiers, as these do not include access to the GPT-5 Thinking model. While Plus and Business subscribers can utilize Standard and Extended modes, only Pro users have access to all four options, including Light and Heavy. Furthermore, the feature is presently restricted to the ChatGPT website and is not yet available on desktop or mobile applications.
Recently, OpenAI has been actively working to enhance its chatbot’s user experience. Just this week, CEO Sam Altman confirmed that ChatGPT’s personalization page was being updated to consolidate various settings into a single, streamlined interface. This revamped page will feature options for personality configuration, custom instructions, and memories, with a global rollout expected by the end of the week.
