Marvel star Charlie Cox has unequivocally stated that he will not be reprising his role as Daredevil in next year’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day, despite rampant fan theories.
During an interview at New York Comic-Con, Cox directly addressed the swirling fan speculation about Daredevil potentially teaming up with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. “I know that they all think I'm in Spider-Man because I'm filming something in London, which I'm not,” Cox clarified. He then added, with unmistakable emphasis, “I'm not in Spider-Man.”
When pressed on whether Daredevil might appear in future Avengers films, specifically next year’s Doomsday or 2027’s Secret Wars, Cox was equally definitive: “No, I'm just concentrating on DD right now.”
The interviewer openly expressed skepticism about Cox’s answers, to which the actor simply responded, “we’ll see.” This widespread disbelief online stems from comparisons to Andrew Garfield’s infamous misdirections regarding his appearance in 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Before the release of No Way Home, Garfield famously misled interviewers about his return. In a post-release interview, he admitted, “I lied to the internet for two years, and it felt great. It was fun to keep it secret! You know when you’re planning a surprise birthday party for someone and they’re like, ‘I hate surprises, tell me is the party happening’… it felt like I was part of organising a surprise birthday party for a bunch of people who I knew would appreciate it.”
Garfield later acknowledged this pattern of dishonesty in a GQ interview, jokingly stating, “I’m gonna disappoint you,” when asked about Brand New Day. He added, “Yeah, no. But I know no one’s gonna trust anything I say from now on.”
Fans initially anticipated Cox’s involvement in Brand New Day, especially after Matt Murdock’s impactful cameo in No Way Home and the confirmed return of Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle, also known as The Punisher. However, Cox’s name was notably absent from Marvel’s initial Avengers: Doomsday cast reveal, though more cast members are expected to be announced.
Regarding Spider-Man: Brand New Day, we do know that Mark Ruffalo (The Hulk) is confirmed, with set photos circulating. Stranger Things star Sadie Sink is also reportedly involved, sparking curiosity about her role. Additionally, photos have confirmed the return of Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds and Zendaya as MJ. Early set videos also hint at a return to more practical web-swinging, a departure from the heavy CGI use in previous MCU Spider-Man films.
For Daredevil fans, a sneak peek at Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 was shown at New York Comic-Con. The exclusive trailer unfortunately leaked online after Krysten Ritter, who plays Jessica Jones, briefly shared a clip on Instagram before deleting it.
The second season of Daredevil: Born Again is expected to premiere next spring, featuring new episodes crafted to align more closely with the characters' Netflix origins. This implies larger roles for Deborah Ann Woll’s Karen Page, Wilson Bethel’s Bullseye, and an appearance by Elden Henson’s Foggy, alongside Ritter’s anticipated return.
Marvel has demonstrated significant confidence in Daredevil: Born Again, having already greenlit Season 3, scheduled for 2027. Furthermore, writer Jesse Wigutow recently confirmed his return to the show’s writers’ room to commence work on future episodes.
