In a significant step towards digitalization, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has declared that it will cease issuing physical migration certificates for Class 10 and 12 students starting from 2025. This initiative is designed to simplify the certificate process and encourage the use of digital documents. From now on, students will exclusively receive their migration certificates in digital format via DigiLocker, a recognized government digital platform.
This decision comes in response to a directive from the University Grants Commission (UGC), confirming that digital certificates from boards such as CBSE will be fully accepted for admissions into higher education. Moreover, the CBSE will eliminate all fees for migration certificates alongside examination fees, effective from the 2025 examinations.
Migration Certificate Changes and Digital Acceptance
Historically, students received both a physical and a digital migration certificate after passing their exams. However, with this new policy, the paper certificate will be completely phased out. Students will now depend solely on the digital copy securely stored within their DigiLocker accounts. For those requiring a physical document during the interim period, hard copies can still be requested through CBSE’s official Duplicate Academic Document System (DADS) website.
Endorsed by the CBSE Examination Committee and its Governing Body, this change will apply to all Class 10 and Class 12 students who successfully pass their examinations from 2025. These digital certificates will be officially recognized for admissions across all educational institutions, leading to a much simpler and more efficient, paperless process.
What is DigiLocker and Why Use It?
DigiLocker is a secure, government-supported digital platform enabling citizens to store and access official documents electronically. For students, it provides a highly convenient method to retrieve mark sheets, passing certificates, and migration certificates from any location, eliminating the need for physical paperwork. This robust platform guarantees easy access and verification by educational institutions and other relevant bodies.
How to Check and Download Your CBSE Migration Certificate via DigiLocker
To access your digital migration certificate, simply follow these five easy steps:
- Visit the DigiLocker website or download the DigiLocker app from your device’s app store.
- Create an account or log in using your mobile number and Aadhaar details.
- Once logged in, go to the ‘Issued Documents’ section.
- Select CBSE from the list of issuers and locate your migration certificate.
- Download or print the digital migration certificate as required for your admission or other uses.
Transition Period and Requests for Hard Copies
Throughout the transitional phase, leading up to the complete digital rollout in 2025, students who still need a physical migration certificate can submit a request through the CBSE’s Duplicate Academic Document System (DADS). This online service, exclusively available on the official CBSE website, will issue a hard copy after verification.
Crucially, the Board will waive all fees for migration certificates starting with the 2025 examination session. This significant change is anticipated to minimize administrative workload and reduce delays for both students and educational institutions.
For comprehensive details and further assistance, students, parents, and schools are encouraged to visit the official CBSE website or the DigiLocker platform.
