Is Marathon truly jinxed? The original game cultivated a dedicated following, but its highly anticipated revival by Bungie has encountered one hurdle after another. The first technical test for the first-person shooter was reportedly a disaster, prompting the developers to re-evaluate the game’s direction and postpone its official launch. This challenging period has also seen significant leadership changes, including a shift in creative directors from Steve Cotton to Julia Nardin. Now, Bungie has revealed another technical test, but don’t expect any details to surface publicly.
Just like Marathon‘s initial closed technical test, this upcoming October playtest is under a strict Non-Disclosure Agreement. This means you won’t be seeing any gameplay footage or hearing any firsthand impressions from journalists, content creators, or even your friends who might be participating.

It’s worth noting that after the disastrous performance of the first test, Bungie eventually lifted the restrictions, permitting participants to share gameplay publicly. However, it’s highly unlikely they’ll make that concession again. If you’re eager to see what Bungie has been working on over the past six months, your only chance is to secure access to the test yourself.
To get a sneak peek at the revamped Marathon, your best bet is to apply for the October closed technical test. This selection process operates much like a lottery. The test itself will run from Wednesday, October 22, to Tuesday, October 28. Applications can be submitted via Steam or Bungie’s official website, but remember, participation is determined purely by chance.
This upcoming technical test will feature three distinct maps, five unique runner shells, and integrated proximity chat. Participants can also expect re-tuned combat pacing, a dedicated solo queue option, and richer environmental storytelling. Naturally, this remains a work in progress, but the community eagerly anticipates significant improvements following April’s initial iteration.
The closed technical test for Marathon is scheduled to run from Wednesday, October 22, through Tuesday, October 28. Interested players can submit their applications on the Bungie website until Thursday, October 16, or through Steam from Monday, October 13, until Sunday, October 26.
If you’re unable to join the test or simply can’t wait for Marathon’s official launch, consider exploring other excellent multiplayer games to satisfy your gaming appetite.
