Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is dramatically enhancing its service offerings, with the official launch of Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) across new regions in India. This highly anticipated feature empowers BSNL customers to make and receive voice calls seamlessly over a Wi-Fi network, providing a crucial lifeline in areas where cellular coverage might be weak or unavailable. This strategic expansion marks a significant step for the state-run telecom provider, bringing its services closer to par with those long offered by private competitors like Jio and Airtel. Furthermore, BSNL recently activated its advanced 4G services in Mumbai, expanding its high-speed data footprint.
BSNL Unveils VoWiFi in Key Regions and Boosts 4G & eSIM Presence
The rollout of BSNL’s VoWiFi services in the West and South Zone circles was proudly announced by DoT Secretary Neeraj Mittal during the company’s silver jubilee celebrations on October 2. This milestone was accompanied by two other major advancements: the launch of BSNL’s 4G network in Mumbai and the nationwide availability of eSIM services. These initiatives collectively underscore BSNL’s commitment to digital transformation and improved customer experience.
The introduction of Wi-Fi calling is a game-changer for BSNL users, enabling crystal-clear voice communication even when traditional mobile signals are poor. Compatible smartphones will intelligently detect weak cellular reception and automatically switch to an available Wi-Fi network, ensuring uninterrupted call connectivity through the user’s existing telecom plan. This convenience has been a standard feature for major private operators like Airtel, Reliance Jio, and Vodafone Idea for several years, typically without any additional charges.
BSNL’s efforts to modernize are evident across multiple fronts. The company recently commenced offering eSIM services in the Tamil Nadu circle, a move facilitated by a partnership with Tata Communications and their “Move” platform. Expanding its 4G footprint, BSNL also launched its high-speed network in Delhi back in August.
Further demonstrating its commitment to accessibility, BSNL entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Department of Posts (DoP) earlier this month. This collaboration aims to make BSNL SIM cards and mobile recharge services available through a vast network of 1.65 lakh post offices nationwide, significantly enhancing reach, especially in rural areas. Adding to this momentum, Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally inaugurated BSNL’s fully indigenous 4G network from Jharsuguda, Odisha, last week, highlighting the national importance and technological prowess behind this ambitious rollout.
