A bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers, undertaking a rare visit to China, has strongly advocated for increased military-to-military dialogue. This marks the first time House representatives have visited Beijing since 2019, while a senatorial group last traveled there in 2023, underscoring the infrequency of high-level congressional engagement amidst strained US-China relations.
Chinese Premier Li Qiang extended a warm welcome to the American delegates, led by Representative Adam Smith. He described their visit as a significant “icebreaking trip” that is expected to strengthen bilateral ties. Premier Li highlighted the global importance of enhanced exchanges and cooperation between the two nations, stating, “It is important for our two countries to have more exchanges and cooperation; this is not only good for our two countries but also of great significance to the world.”
Representative Smith, a Democrat serving on the House Armed Services Committee, affirmed that both sides concurred on the overarching goal of the visit. He emphasized that while trade and economy were primary discussion points, a significant focus was placed on military-to-military conversations. Smith conveyed his deep concern regarding the current lack of sufficient communication channels between the two powerful militaries.
The delegation also included prominent figures such as Michael Baumgartner, a Republican member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and Democrats Ro Khanna and Chrissy Houlahan, both from the House Armed Services Committee. Their visit to China is scheduled to conclude on Thursday.
Relations between the United States and China have significantly deteriorated since former President Donald Trump’s initial term. Key points of contention include ongoing trade disputes, the contentious issue of Taiwan’s sovereignty (which China regards as its own territory), Beijing’s support for Russia, and China’s extensive claims in the disputed South China Sea. Representative Smith reiterated the vital role both nations play on the global stage, advocating for peaceful coexistence. He expressed appreciation for Premier Li’s commitment to building and strengthening this crucial relationship.
In a related development, former President Trump announced his intention to meet with Chinese leader Xi Jinping at an upcoming regional summit in South Korea at the end of October. He also indicated plans for a visit to China early next year, following a recent extensive phone conversation between the two leaders.
