A major highlight from the recent Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 multiplayer beta was undoubtedly its “open” playlists, which drastically reduced or entirely removed skill-based matchmaking (SBMM). Players have long yearned for this change, and now, Activision has officially confirmed that this “minimal skill consideration” approach will be the default experience for Black Ops 7 multiplayer right from day one.
Activision explicitly stated in a recent blog post: “At launch, open matchmaking with minimal skill consideration will be the default for Black Ops 7 multiplayer. Simply put, imagine the matchmaking experience of Open Moshpit from the beta, but as the standard in Black Ops 7 on day one.” The company emphasized their belief in offering players a more diverse and enjoyable experience, noting that the beta provided a crucial testing ground for this new direction.

While Activision’s decision to finally heed years of player feedback regarding SBMM is welcome, the timing is notably strategic, coinciding with the highly anticipated launch of Battlefield 6, a direct competitor to Black Ops 7.
Furthermore, Activision acknowledged player feedback concerning persistent lobbies. They’ve confirmed that these will indeed be available at launch for Black Ops 7, addressing prior frustrations where lobbies would frequently disband after each match.
Addressing concerns about “rotational aim assist” in Black Ops 7, Activision committed to ensuring a “fair and competitive balance” across all input devices. Specific details on how they plan to refine controller aim assist are expected closer to the game’s November release.
Activision reiterated the core purpose of the beta: to rigorously test the game, gather crucial player data, and collect real-time feedback. They assured players that a wealth of information was collected and that work is already underway to implement key improvements and updates for the game’s official launch. Further confirmed changes will be communicated in the coming weeks.
Coinciding with the Black Ops 7 multiplayer beta’s conclusion on October 9, Black Ops 6 is simultaneously launching its Season 6 content and a significant Halloween event. Additionally, players can jump into a free trial for Black Ops 6 starting today.
