Bengaluru is seeing a heartwarming trend on its roads with the introduction of heart-shaped traffic signals. A recent social media post showcasing these unique signals went viral, sparking joy and relatable comments from residents who spend significant time navigating the city’s traffic. Many appreciate this ‘little touch’ that makes the city feel more ‘human,’ with one user humorously noting how apt it is given the amount of time spent waiting at signals.
Beyond the charming design, Bengaluru is also advancing its traffic management with smart signal systems. These systems, now linked to the Mappls navigation app, provide real-time countdowns for traffic lights, a first for India. The Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP) announced that over 125 smart signals across the city have been integrated, allowing drivers to anticipate signal changes up to 500 meters in advance. This initiative, developed with Mappls (MapmyIndia), aims to help commuters plan their journeys better, reduce sudden braking, and ultimately decrease congestion and honking. Officials are hopeful that these person-centric innovations, from the whimsical heart signals to the practical smart syncing, will contribute to a more humane and less stressful commuting experience in Bengaluru.
