A poignant encounter in Canada has sparked widespread discussion online after a Bengaluru woman shared her experience meeting a military doctor working as a cab driver. Meghana Srinivas, who is now based in Canada, captured the moment in a video that has since gone viral, shedding light on the realities faced by many skilled professionals who relocate to foreign countries for better opportunities.
Srinivas encountered the doctor while traveling from Mississauga to Toronto. She learned that the driver, originally from Afghanistan, had previously served as a military doctor for both the US and Canada. Currently residing in Canada as a Permanent Resident, he is diligently working towards obtaining his medical license to continue his practice in his new country. He reportedly earns around $4,000 a month from his taxi service but dedicates a significant portion, approximately $3,000, to rent for his one-bedroom condo in Toronto, illustrating the high cost of living.
Reflecting on the experience, Srinivas, a realtor herself, offered advice to aspiring immigrants and international students considering a move to Canada. She emphasized the importance of thorough research, not just about the education system or specific cities, but also about the practical aspects of daily life, the job market, and the process of re-establishing a career in a new environment.
“Canada offers incredible opportunities,” Srinivas told HT.com, “but success here requires preparation, adaptability, and patience. Come with skills that are in demand, an open mind to learn, and the determination to grow. If you do that, this country truly rewards your hard work and resilience.”
The video resonated with many on social media, prompting a flood of comments and shared experiences. One user cautioned against moving to Canada after the age of 35-40, especially for doctors, citing the increasing difficulty for International Medical Graduates to secure residency due to changes in regulations. Others echoed the sentiment that finding a job matching one’s skills and worth can be challenging and often takes years. The high rent in Toronto also became a talking point, with Srinivas confirming that such rent prices are indeed standard for the city.
