One of the most debated topics leading up to the release of Battlefield 6 has been the shift in multiplayer weapon playlists, specifically the “Open” versus “Closed” systems. Traditionally, Battlefield titles assigned unique and exclusive weapons to each class. However, for Battlefield 6, developers are leaning towards an “Open” weapon setup, allowing players to equip any weapon they desire, regardless of their chosen class.
While the community voiced significant preference for the traditional “Closed” system, data gathered from the recent beta — which featured both playlist types — tells a different story. According to the developers, “The vast majority of players, after trying both playlist types, chose to stick with Open weapons. This reinforces our belief that Open weapons is the right path forward for Battlefield 6.” They further noted that class pick rates remained “mostly identical with 1-2% difference at most” between the two systems.
Interestingly, players using the Open weapon setup showed a slight performance edge, achieving an average of 0.2 more kills per hour in Conquest mode and 0.1 more kills per hour in Breakthrough mode compared to those in Closed playlists.
Despite these findings supporting the Open weapon system, Battlefield Studios has confirmed they will still offer a Closed weapons playlist at launch for players who prefer the classic class-locked experience.
Battlefield 6 is set to launch on October 10th for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Be aware that physical copies of the game have already appeared in the wild, so exercise caution if you wish to avoid any potential story spoilers before release.
