The launch of Battlefield 2042 was a moment etched in the minds of many gamers, largely due to its significant controversies. This entry in EA’s celebrated series faced widespread disappointment over its unfinished multiplayer experience and a complete lack of a campaign mode, issues from which it never fully recovered. While it saw a recent surge in player numbers, particularly after the Battlefield 6 open beta, its legacy remains marred. However, in an exclusive interview with PCGamesN, a developer from the Battlefield 6 team shared their renewed confidence in the upcoming title.
Jeremy Chubb, a producer at DICE, reflected on the previous installment: “Battlefield 2042, for us, represented a highly ambitious endeavor. We aimed to fully explore the potential of 128-player battles and expansive maps. Yet, for a considerable portion of our player base, it simply didn’t capture the essence of what a Battlefield game should feel like.”
This sentiment is widely echoed, as Battlefield 2042 earned a mediocre 68 on Metacritic, with user scores plummeting to a dismal 2.3/10. However, this critical feedback has spurred the developers to re-center the series on its core principles for Battlefield 6. Our recent preview of BF6 suggests it could potentially rank among the best first-person shooter games in years.
Chubb elaborated on the new direction: “With Battlefield 6, we’ve consciously aligned ourselves much more closely with the foundational elements of Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4. You’ll find strong echoes of those experiences throughout this game.”
Having completed a successful open beta, the development team harbors significantly more optimism for Battlefield 6 compared to their sentiments about 2042. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with criticisms primarily focusing on specific aspects of the beta rather than the core game itself. For those who found the beta maps a bit cramped, rest assured that the full release will feature much larger environments to explore.
Chubb expressed immense enthusiasm regarding the current player reception: “The energy we’re receiving from our audience right now is simply overwhelming, and it truly feels distinct from the 2042 launch. Our confidence stems from our commitment to collaborative development with the community. Through initiatives like ‘Battlefield Labs,’ we’ve shared early, sometimes unrefined, software with players, a journey we all embraced together to showcase in-development experiences.”
The triumphant open beta, combined with continuous dialogue via Battlefield Labs tests, has provided Battlefield Studios with a wealth of consistent feedback. This ongoing, almost “early access” approach, could very well be the key to unlocking the full potential of future Battlefield titles.
“We were certainly aware of the vast and passionate Battlefield fanbase,” Chubb affirmed. “They care deeply about the games we create. However, I believe there’s immense value in fostering a collaborative environment where everyone can contribute to shaping these experiences.”
