Fans were eagerly anticipating the trailer for ‘Thamma,’ the latest installment in Maddock’s horror-comedy franchise, especially after the success of ‘Stree 2.’ However, upon its release on September 26th, the trailer left many feeling underwhelmed, with some taking to Reddit to voice their disappointment.
Comments on the platform suggested that the trailer relied heavily on recycled jokes, with one user noting, “Instagram reels se saare jokes uthaye hai” (All the jokes are lifted from Instagram reels). Another expressed that the film’s humor and setting felt too similar to other Maddock productions, lamenting a missed opportunity for a more original concept, perhaps featuring Ayushmann Khurrana as a Dracula character adapting to the modern world.
Critics also pointed out the perceived repetitive nature of the jokes and a general lack of freshness, with some hoping for a compelling love story that seemed to be absent from the trailer’s focus. Many felt the makers resorted to a formulaic approach, even questioning if the ‘Bhediya’ template was copied.
Despite the widespread criticism of the trailer, Varun Dhawan’s cameo as ‘Bhediya’ emerged as a major highlight, drawing considerable praise. Fans on social media platform X expressed excitement about his appearance, with comments like “Waohhh, what an upgrade! #VarunDhawan #Bhediya #ThammaTrailer” and anticipation for a potential face-off between Bhediya and the vampire character in ‘Thamma.’
Directed by Aditya Sarpotdar, known for ‘Munjya,’ ‘Thamma’ is described as a ‘bloody love story’ and is part of Maddock’s successful horror-comedy universe that began with ‘Stree’ in 2018. The film is slated for a Diwali release on October 21st.
