On Monday, Amazon Web Services (AWS) confirmed ongoing issues with its cloud service infrastructure. This disruption immediately triggered widespread outages and service interruptions across numerous websites and applications, affecting everything from popular gaming platforms to essential entertainment services.
In response, Amazon’s engineering teams issued a statement confirming they were diligently working to mitigate the impact and pinpoint the root cause of the problem. They noted that approximately 28 AWS services were affected, with significant issues reported in its crucial ‘US-EAST-1’ region.
Independent internet outage tracker, DownDetector, quickly highlighted the extensive nature of the problem, showing service disruptions for dozens of prominent online destinations. Among those reporting issues were Amazon itself, the payment app Venmo, streaming service Hulu, fast-food giant McDonald’s, and the cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase.
Several affected companies, including the major cryptocurrency platform Coinbase, explicitly attributed their service interruptions to the Amazon Web Services outage.
Coinbase publicly stated via X (formerly Twitter): ‘We’re aware many users are currently unable to access Coinbase due to an AWS outage. Our team is working on the issue and we’ll provide updates here. All funds are safe.’ This reassured users while confirming the AWS link.
The artificial intelligence startup Perplexity also confirmed it was experiencing a service disruption.
Aravind Srinivas, CEO of Perplexity, echoed the sentiment, stating, ‘The root cause is an an AWS issue. We’re working on resolving it.’
Please note: This is an ongoing situation, and we will continue to provide updates as new information becomes available.
