Apple is gearing up to introduce its very first foldable smartphone next year, marking a significant entry into this innovative device segment. According to TF Securities International analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, a crucial component — the foldable hinge — might be more affordable than initially expected. In his latest research note, Kuo estimates the unit cost for this hinge could be around $70 to $80 (approximately Rs. 7,000 to Rs. 8,000) once it enters mass production. Apple’s foldable device is expected to feature a frame crafted from a blend of titanium and aluminum, and it’s rumored to adopt a book-style folding design with a 7.8-inch internal display.
Could Apple’s Foldable iPhone Be More Attainable?
Kuo detailed in a recent post that the average selling price (ASP) for the hinge of Apple’s foldable iPhone during mass production is projected to be notably lower, at roughly $70 to $80. This figure is significantly below the initial expectations of $100 to $120 (around Rs. 8,000 to Rs. 10,000) or even higher for such a sophisticated component.
The analyst attributes this unexpected price reduction to optimized assembly design and the strategic involvement of Foxconn, rather than a general decline in upstream component expenses. Kuo further suggests that this substantial decrease in hinge costs could empower Apple to either boost its profit margins or pass on the savings to consumers, potentially expanding its market presence in the foldable sector.
In a strategic move, Foxconn and the Taiwanese firm Shin Zu Shing (SZS) have reportedly established a joint venture specifically for manufacturing the foldable iPhone’s hinge. Foxconn is said to hold a slightly larger stake and is spearheading the strategic direction of this partnership.
The joint venture has reportedly secured approximately 65 percent of the initial hinge orders, with Amphenol expected to handle the remaining 35 percent. Kuo also speculates that Luxshare-ICT might join as an additional hinge supplier sometime after 2027, which could further intensify competition and potentially drive hinge prices down even more.
Apple’s inaugural foldable iPhone is rumored to debut in September of next year, coinciding with the launch of the iPhone 18 series. This device, possibly named iPhone 18 Fold, is expected to feature a robust frame constructed from a combination of titanium and aluminum. Early predictions suggest it could carry a premium price tag of $1,999 (roughly Rs. 1,74,000).
The design of the foldable iPhone is anticipated to be a book-style fold, similar to Samsung’s popular Galaxy Z Fold series. Speculations indicate it will boast a 7.8-inch inner display and a 5.5-inch outer display. In terms of dimensions, it’s believed to measure around 9.2mm thick when folded and a slim 4.6mm when unfolded.
