Ancient Roman Soldiers Discovered in Croatian Mass Grave, Study Reveals

In a significant archaeological find in Croatia, researchers have identified seven ancient skeletons unearthed in a mass grave as Roman soldiers. These remains are believed to be around 1,700 years old.

The discovery was made during excavations in 2011 near the site of Mursa, an ancient Roman city now known as Osijek in eastern Croatia. The seven male skeletons, found in remarkable condition, showed signs of various injuries, suggesting a violent end. Researchers from several European institutions have been studying these remains, aiming to understand more about the lives and deaths of these individuals.

The study, published recently, indicates that the men were between 36 and 50 years old and were of above-average height and robust build. Their diets were predominantly vegetarian, with some evidence of meat and seafood consumption. The skeletons exhibited injuries consistent with blunt force trauma, and two individuals had puncture wounds on their torsos, possibly from arrows or spear tips. Additionally, all the men suffered from a pulmonary disease in their final days.

DNA analysis revealed a diverse ancestry among the group, with no clear indication that they were local to the region. This finding aligns with the historical context of the Roman Empire, which was known for its extensive movements of people and frequent conflicts.

Experts believe these soldiers may have been victims of the tumultuous ‘Crisis of the Third Century,’ possibly during the Battle of Mursa in 260 CE, a period marked by numerous battles between competing claimants to the Roman throne.

The location of the mass grave, believed to be a former water well, further supports the theory of a mass casualty event. The researchers note that such mass burials were uncommon in the Roman Empire, typically occurring only during extreme circumstances. The way the skeletons were found suggests they were quickly placed into the well and covered.

The ancient city of Mursa has long been a site of historical and archaeological importance, yielding numerous discoveries from various ancient civilizations.
