Imagine a fashion show set amidst shelves of toys at London’s iconic Hamleys on Regent Street. It might sound unconventional, but for designer Anamika Khanna’s label AK|OK, this whimsical backdrop perfectly complemented its debut collection at London Fashion Week on September 22nd.
As models gracefully moved through aisles filled with toy cars and plush animals, AK|OK’s inaugural collection unfolded, weaving a narrative of nostalgia. It showcased Khanna’s unique vision of reinterpreting India’s rich textile and craft traditions through a distinctly modern gaze.
Anamika Khanna explains her inspiration: “I’ve always believed in pushing boundaries when showcasing India globally. For this London Fashion Week collection, I envisioned a ‘cool Indian London girl’ with deep Indian roots, inspired by treasures she might find at her grandparents’ home. The collection then explores how she would integrate these heritage pieces into her contemporary wardrobe back in London.”
The collection itself is a stunning blend of tradition and modernity, featuring fluid capes, relaxed trousers, elegant long coats, and oversized shirts. Traditional crafts are reimagined, with delicate Chikankari embroidery gracing coats and intricate silver details, reminiscent of Indian jewelry, adorning jeans, skirts, and boots. Khanna found particular excitement in reinterpreting classic Indian silhouettes like the churidar and angrakha through a fresh, international perspective.
Khanna emphasizes her profound connection to her roots, stating, “I am incredibly proud of my heritage. It’s my foundation. My goal is to draw from this rich legacy to create clothing that is both contemporary and wearable, without appearing costume-like or intimidating. Finding that delicate balance is always a creative challenge.”
Following eight successful shows in India over four years, Anamika felt London was the perfect stage for AK|OK’s international debut. The city’s fashion-forward, experimental, and inclusive spirit resonated deeply with her brand’s ethos.
“From the very beginning, AK|OK was conceived with global aspirations, aiming to be an Indian brand offering relevant ready-to-wear fashion on an international scale,” she explains. “To achieve that, our designs need to be showcased to a global audience in a specific light, and London, with its strong reception to diverse cultures, provided the ideal platform.”
Anamika views AK|OK’s London debut as a significant milestone, asserting that the brand is in constant evolution. “AK|OK is more than just fashion; it’s an entire universe, a lifestyle, a mindset,” she reveals. “It’s about embracing ease, and that begins with how you dress.” She notes that the brand’s philosophy — embodying acceptance and imperfection — is increasingly resonating with people: “If you make a mistake, it’s okay. If you’re not perfect, it’s okay. Even if your mix-and-match isn’t ‘right,’ it’s still okay.”
This year has been exceptionally dynamic for Anamika, who not only expanded into South India with her first flagship store in Hyderabad but also designed Isha Ambani’s show-stopping MET Gala outfit and inaugurated Lakme Fashion Week with her “Silver Collar” collection. “I thrive on creative challenges,” she muses with a laugh, “that’s just the nature of fashion.”
Looking ahead, Anamika teases further exciting developments for the year, including the completion of her couture collection photoshoot, an upcoming range of bags, and the anticipated grand opening of another Mumbai store.
