Anthropic, the innovative artificial intelligence startup enjoying significant backing from tech giants like Google and Amazon, has officially announced its plans to open its inaugural office in India next year. This strategic expansion aims to capitalize on India’s rapidly growing enthusiasm for advanced AI technologies.
India is experiencing a significant acceleration in AI adoption, driven by increased enterprise spending on technology, a vibrant pool of skilled professionals, and a surge in investor confidence. This makes the nation a pivotal battleground for global AI companies.
The country, with its vast internet user base, has already proven to be Anthropic’s second-largest consumer market for its sophisticated chatbot, Claude. Claude is renowned for its powerful coding abilities and is a key competitor to OpenAI’s popular ChatGPT.
While Anthropic currently provides both free and premium versions of Claude in India, it has yet to introduce pricing denominated in local currency, suggesting potential future adjustments to cater to the Indian market.
Dario Amodei, Anthropic’s co-founder and CEO, is slated to visit India this week. His itinerary includes crucial meetings with government officials and various corporate partners, underscoring the company’s commitment to its expansion in the region. Anthropic is valued at an impressive $183 billion (approximately Rs. 16,24,797 crore).
The new office will be strategically established in Bengaluru, often hailed as India’s premier technology hub. Operations are expected to commence in early 2026. This will mark Anthropic’s second office presence in the Asia Pacific region, following its Tokyo branch.
The Indian AI landscape is fiercely competitive, with OpenAI (backed by Microsoft) also establishing its formal legal presence in the country in 2025 and planning its first New Delhi office later this year. Both OpenAI and Anthropic face robust competition from other key players, including Google’s Gemini and the promising AI startup Perplexity, both of which have made their advanced features accessible for free to a wide user base in the Indian market.
Just last month, Anthropic signaled its ambitious growth plans by announcing its intention to triple its international workforce. This move is a direct response to the escalating global demand for its cutting-edge Claude AI models outside of its home market, the United States.
