This week brings a mix of emotions across Israel. While many celebrate the return of living hostages from Gaza, others are grappling with the heartbreaking reality of mourning the dead. The first burials for two Israelis whose bodies were recently returned from the enclave are scheduled for Wednesday, marking a somber chapter in the ongoing conflict.
A funeral for Guy Ilouz, who was abducted during the horrific Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023, will be held this afternoon in central Israel. The Hostage Families Forum, an organization advocating for those held captive in Gaza, confirmed the arrangements for Ilouz. He was initially wounded while fleeing the Nova music festival and later succumbed to his injuries in Gaza, reportedly without adequate medical attention.
Later on Wednesday evening, Daniel Peretz, 22, will also be laid to rest. Peretz was part of a tank crew that bravely confronted Hamas militants during the October 7 assault. He was declared deceased by the Israeli military in March 2024, and his family had previously held a memorial service for him.
Since Monday, Hamas militants in Gaza have handed over the remains of eight individuals. Israeli authorities have identified six of these as Israeli citizens, with one identified as a Nepali national. The identity of the eighth person remains unclear at this time.
Hamas officials have indicated that locating all bodies held within Gaza is a significant challenge due to the widespread destruction inflicted upon the enclave over two years of intense warfare. In response, Israeli officials have hinted at potential punitive measures, such as limiting humanitarian aid trucks entering Gaza, if more remains are not released.
Maya Regev, herself freed from Gaza captivity in November 2023, shared a poignant message on social media for Ilouz, whom she met in a Gaza hospital. She recalled their conversations in “the darkest and most horrific place that man has known,” reflecting on his week of solitary suffering before her arrival.
