The world-renowned Louvre Museum in Paris was the scene of a daring robbery on Sunday morning, confirmed by French officials.
Authorities have not yet released details on which, if any, of the museum’s priceless artifacts were taken. France’s Culture Minister, Rachida Dati, stated that there were no reported injuries and that police were promptly on site.
Dati announced that “Investigations are underway.” There has been no immediate statement from the Paris police regarding the incident.
The museum itself confirmed the closure on its social media channels, citing “exceptional reasons” for Sunday’s shutdown.
Home to an astonishing collection of over 33,000 works of art, including iconic sculptures, paintings, and antiques, the Louvre is one of the world’s most visited cultural institutions. Among its most famous treasures is Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece, the Mona Lisa. The museum typically welcomes up to 30,000 visitors daily.
This is a developing story.
