A video capturing an Indian-origin couple sharing a kiss at a popular Garba event in Vadodara, Gujarat, has ignited a firestorm of controversy and led to a formal apology from the couple. The incident occurred at the United Way Garba in Vadodara, a highly anticipated Navratri celebration drawing thousands. Footage of the public display of affection, shared widely online, sparked outrage among attendees and cultural observers, who deemed the behavior inappropriate for the religious festival.
The couple, identified as Pratik Patel and his wife, who have been residing in Australia for several years, were visiting India. Following the video’s circulation, religious groups like the Sanatan Sant Samiti voiced strong disapproval and demanded action against the event organizers. An advocate filed a complaint with the Atladara Police Station, citing hurt religious sentiments.
Social media users also condemned the couple’s actions, accusing them of disrespecting a sacred cultural event. In response to the escalating backlash and summoning by the police, the couple submitted a written apology. They stated that they recognized the sacredness of the venue during Navratri and regretted their actions.
The police confirmed the couple’s 16-year marriage and noted they have two children. Despite being locals, their residence in Australia meant they were visitors in India. Following the resolution of the controversy and the issuance of their apology, the couple has since left India and returned to Australia.
