A devastating crush at a political rally in India’s southern state of Tamil Nadu has resulted in the tragic loss of at least 39 lives, including many children. Officials confirmed the grim toll, with an additional 51 individuals receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the incident.
The event, organized for popular actor-turned-politician Vijay, drew tens of thousands of supporters to the Karur district. Reports indicate that the rally experienced significant delays, contributing to the overwhelming surge of the crowd.
Devastating images broadcast on television showed the chaotic scenes, with people fainting amidst the dense throngs of attendees.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed his condolences and announced that families of the deceased would receive compensation, alongside an official inquiry into the stampede.
Actor Vijay shared his profound grief, describing his heart as “broken” and expressing “unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow.” He extended his “deepest sympathies and condolences” to the affected families and offered prayers for the recovery of those hospitalized.
India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi also conveyed his sorrow, calling the incident “unfortunate” and “deeply saddening.” Such deadly crowd crushes, unfortunately, are not an uncommon occurrence in India, with similar tragic events having taken place at major festivals and public gatherings.
