A festive political rally in southern India tragically turned deadly on Saturday when a massive crowd surge claimed the lives of dozens and left over 40 injured. The horrific incident occurred as thousands rushed towards the temporary stage where beloved actor-turned-politician, Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar, known as Vijay, was addressing his supporters.
According to state officials, at least 36 individuals, including eight children, perished in the chaos. An additional 45 people were hospitalized in Karur, Tamil Nadu, the city where the stampede unfolded. M.K. Stalin, the state’s chief minister, conveyed his profound sorrow on social media, while Health Minister Ma Subramanian indicated to local media that the number of fatalities was unfortunately expected to climb.
The tragedy began as the popular actor and political leader, Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar, addressed the enthusiastic crowd from a makeshift stage atop a bus.
At 51, Mr. Chandrasekhar is a towering figure in Tamil Nadu’s entertainment industry, having starred in numerous blockbusters. In 2024, he transitioned from his successful acting career into the political arena, founding his own party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.
Footage from the rally, widely circulated on social media, captured the actor pausing his speech to appeal to his fans, urging them to clear a path for ambulances struggling to reach those in need.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his heartfelt condolences to the families affected by the incident, describing it as ‘deeply saddening’ in a post. Chief Minister Stalin also issued a public statement, calling on citizens to cooperate fully with medical personnel and law enforcement during this critical time.
Mr. Chandrasekhar himself released an emotional statement online, expressing his grief: “My heart is shattered. The sorrow I am feeling is indescribable.”
