Ariana Madix Unpacks Her Favorite Things: From Reality TV to Kimchi Jjigae

Just two short years ago, Ariana Madix was at the center of a media storm after a highly publicized cheating scandal involving her boyfriend unfolded on “Vanderpump Rules.” Fast forward to today, and Ariana has masterfully redirected the narrative, thanks to her dynamic role as host of the wildly popular reality series, “Love Island USA.”

“It’s simply more enjoyable to be the host,” Madix shared, “rather than having your personal life become the main event.” With two successful seasons of the dating show under her belt, she’s now returned for “Love Island Games,” a thrilling spin-off that reunites past contestants for a chance at love and glory through new challenges. You can catch the drama streaming exclusively on Peacock this month.

Beyond the “Love Island” phenomenon, Madix, at 40, has had an incredibly busy couple of years. She graced the Broadway stage as Roxie Hart in “Chicago,” launched a thriving sandwich shop with her “Vanderpump” co-star Katie Maloney, and even co-hosted a “Love Island” reunion alongside Andy Cohen.

Reflecting on her packed schedule, she admitted, “It often feels like I’m constantly on the go. When things are really hectic, I dream of a vacation. But then, if I actually get a few days off, I find myself restless and feeling unproductive.”

Speaking from Fiji, where she was gearing up for “Love Island Games” filming, Madix openly discussed her passions, from her favorite Korean dish and consistent gym routine to why she believes “The Holiday” is the ultimate film. Here are some highlights from our chat.

The Gym

Reluctantly, I’ve come to accept that cardio truly makes a difference, so it’s now a regular part of my workouts, despite my dislike for it. I crank up the music in my headphones or get lost in an audiobook, completely zoning out. It’s become a fantastic way to clear my head and recharge my brain.

Electronic Dance Music

For me, EDM is pure freedom. It often makes me feel invincible, like a superhero or a powerful robot that can’t be stopped. The genre is incredibly diverse, encompassing countless subgenres, and I genuinely adore them all. So, depending on my mood, I might lean towards something melodic and poppy, or dive into some heavier techno beats.

Do-Not-Disturb Mode

Engaging ‘do-not-disturb’ mode is perhaps the only time I truly feel human again. It takes me back to childhood, or even high school with my old Nokia, when constant availability wasn’t a thing. I’m sure people trying to reach me aren’t thrilled, but I only carve out a few hours a day for it. Though, I’m seriously considering extending that time.

My Sandwich Shop

I know I’m biased, but I also know I’m right: I’m incredibly proud of our charming little sandwich shop.

‘Love Island’ Fan Edits

The creativity of the fans is truly amazing. They’ll pluck a single line from a contestant, then meticulously craft a video with incredible music, creating something truly special. It’s a wonderful testament to how deeply people connect with the show. Some of them are genuinely beautiful, like the Nicolandria edits. I often find myself thinking, “Yes! They’re seeing exactly what I’m seeing” when I watch those sweet clips of contestants exchanging glances.

Crunchy-Looking Leaves

Even if it means going a little out of my way, if I spot a truly crunchy-looking leaf, I absolutely have to step on it. I like to start with my heel and slowly press down to maximize that satisfying crunch. It’s a simple pleasure I’ve enjoyed my entire life.

Kimchi Jjigae

I’m completely obsessed with two things: kimchi and soup. Kimchi Jjigae is essentially the perfect union of both, a delicious baby born from their marriage! We are truly fortunate to have such incredible Korean food options in cities like New York and L.A.

Audiobooks

I don’t stick to a single genre; I love to explore! If I’ve just finished a non-fiction or autobiographical title, my next listen might be something completely different, like fantastical fiction. It’s simply challenging for me to find time to read physical books, so I’m incredibly thankful for audiobooks, which allow me to keep a vibrant literary world in my life.

‘The Holiday’

While I’d happily watch it year-round, I make an effort to hold off on “The Holiday” until after Thanksgiving as a small act of self-control. I’m completely captivated by everything in it, from the hilarious fake movie trailers to my ongoing fantasy of visiting the Cotswolds. And, of course, the subtle L.A. inside jokes and Jude Law in glasses – it’s just a flawless film in my opinion.

Musicals

Having been a theater major and obsessed with stage productions since childhood, I frequently revisit musicals. “Hamilton” is a constant favorite; I’ll often listen to “Wait for It” multiple times throughout the day.
