Palestine has formally submitted an application to join the BRICS group, a significant diplomatic step that follows recent weeks during which more nations have recognized its statehood. The Palestinian Ambassador to Russia, Abdel Hafiz Nofal, shared this development with Russian media outlets, noting that a response to their application is still awaited.
Ambassador Nofal clarified that Palestine’s full membership is contingent upon certain conditions. He expressed a hopeful outlook, suggesting that Palestine might initially participate as a guest within the association, eventually becoming a full member once all requirements are fulfilled.
The BRICS alliance, which originally included Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has undergone notable expansion. In 2024, it broadened its membership to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates, with Indonesia joining in 2025, highlighting its growing global presence and influence.
In response to the Palestinian envoy’s comments, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun affirmed China’s willingness to embrace additional ‘like-minded partners’ into the BRICS cooperative framework. Mr. Guo underscored BRICS’ role as a vital platform for collaboration among emerging markets and developing countries, emphasizing its contribution to fostering multipolarity and greater democracy in international relations. He reiterated China’s open invitation for partners who align with these goals.
This diplomatic initiative by Palestine gains further momentum as several countries, including Canada, Australia, Portugal, and the U.K., have recently recognized Palestine as a state, thereby enhancing its international standing and legitimacy.
