Nepal’s interim cabinet welcomed three new ministers on Monday, September 15, 2025. The oath-taking ceremony took place at Sital Niwas, the official residence of the President in Kathmandu.
Kulman Ghising, previously the Executive Director of the Nepal Electricity Authority, will now lead the Ministry of Energy, Urban Development, and Physical Infrastructure. Renowned lawyer Om Prakash Aryal has been appointed to the Ministry of Law and Home Affairs, while Rameshore Khanal, Nepal’s former Finance Secretary, steps in to oversee the Ministry of Finance.
Images from this morning’s ceremony showed the three leaders officially taking on their new roles. This expansion is a key part of the interim government’s broader efforts to stabilize governance in the wake of recent political unrest.
Following several days of intense protests, President Ram Chandra Poudel appointed Sushila Karki as the head of the interim government on Friday, September 12. She formally assumed office on Sunday, September 14. The cabinet expansion, originally slated for Sunday, was slightly postponed due to her demanding schedule.
According to an official, Ms. Karki is actively reviewing candidates for other ministerial positions. “The Prime Minister is going through the names of various personnel to take them on board. She has also held rounds of consultations and interviews with them about their roadmap ahead,” the official stated.
As a former Chief Justice, Ms. Karki is tasked with overseeing fresh elections by March 5, after which she will step down for a new Prime Minister to be chosen by the newly elected Parliament.
Meanwhile, residents of Nepal’s capital report that Kathmandu is struggling to return to normalcy, with businesses particularly affected by the recent wave of violent anti-corruption protests.
“The situation is still not back to its usual pace. The people’s movement has somewhat subsided, but sales have been severely impacted,” shared Sabita Surkheti, a local resident, describing the current atmosphere on Kathmandu’s streets.
