The Russian embassy in Romania has forcefully stated that a recent drone incursion into Romanian airspace was a ‘provocation’ orchestrated by Ukraine. This strong accusation comes after Moscow’s envoy was formally summoned by the Foreign Ministry in Bucharest to address the incident.
Ambassador Vladimir Lipayev categorically denied Romania’s allegations that Russia was responsible for the intrusion, labeling them ‘unfounded.’
In a late Sunday statement (September 14, 2025), the embassy declared: ‘All the facts lead one to believe that it was a deliberate provocation by the Kyiv regime.’ The statement further criticized Bucharest for failing to ‘concretely and convincingly respond’ to questions raised by Russia regarding the event.
Romania has experienced several incidents involving drone fragments crashing onto its territory since February 2022, when Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. These occurrences have become particularly frequent as Russia intensifies its attacks on Ukrainian port facilities.
Late on Saturday, Romania officially reported that its airspace had been breached by a Russian drone. In response, two F-16 fighter jets were scrambled by the Romanian Defence Ministry. These jets ‘detected a drone in national airspace’ and tracked its trajectory until it vanished from radar. The Ministry assured the public that the drone did not fly over populated areas and posed no immediate threat to the safety of residents.
