Ewan McGregor, the beloved actor behind Obi-Wan Kenobi, recently shared his initial surprise regarding Disney+’s Star Wars launch. He had always envisioned his own Obi-Wan series as the monumental debut for the franchise on the streaming service. However, things took an unexpected turn when another show, The Mandalorian, premiered first.
When Disney+ officially launched in November 2019, it was The Mandalorian, starring Pedro Pascal, that instantly captivated audiences. This new series quickly became a massive hit, fueling the streamer’s early success and cementing its place as one of the most popular Star Wars shows ever. According to McGregor’s candid comments, The Mandalorian somewhat “stole the thunder” from what he believed was meant to be Obi-Wan’s grand introduction.
During Fan Expo Chicago 2025, McGregor recounted his feelings: “They brought out Disney+ and they wanted a big splash, and I thought that’s what we were going to be and then just before we made it, The Mandalorian came out.”
A brief video segment was included here, discussing how Obi-Wan Kenobi might have created more problems than solutions for the Star Wars franchise.
The Obi-Wan Kenobi series, which brought McGregor back to his iconic prequel-era role, didn’t actually arrive until May 2022. By then, The Mandalorian was already a firmly established and widely celebrated sensation. McGregor reflected on the situation with a touch of humor and bewilderment, saying, “I thought, ‘Wait a minute, I thought we were supposed to be the big splash.’ I thought, ‘Wait a minute, what’s this, what’s this going on here?’ But there would seem to be plenty of room for all of us.”
Since the conclusion of the Obi-Wan Kenobi miniseries, McGregor has openly expressed his desire for a second season, or at the very least, another opportunity to portray the wise Jedi Master. In a lighthearted moment during an August convention, he even joked, “Somebody give me a job. Come on Disney. We need Season 2 for goodness sake. What are we waiting for?”

Despite McGregor’s enthusiasm, Disney has not yet indicated any plans for an Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2. The studio is currently focusing on other exciting Star Wars projects, including a second season of the Ahsoka series. Fans can also look forward to a new film, “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” hitting theaters next year. Other upcoming movie plans involve stars like Ryan Gosling and Matt Smith in “Star Wars: Starfighter,” and several projects that will see the return of Daisy Ridley as Rey.
