Director Naoki Hamaguchi has confidently stated that Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 is on track to be a ‘proper, high-quality’ finale, dispelling fan worries. This reassurance comes despite Square Enix’s previous acknowledgment that Rebirth ‘did not meet expectations’ in its initial sales. Hamaguchi confirmed that Rebirth has, in fact, been ‘doing very well’ on both PC and PS5, allowing the team to invest that success into the third and final installment.
“The second entry, FFVII Rebirth, has been doing very well on both PS5 and PC,” Hamaguchi noted in an interview. “I know some fans have expressed concerns, but please rest assured, we’ll be able to deliver a proper, high-quality third instalment.”
Initial worries centered on whether the scope of Part 3 would be scaled back following Rebirth‘s earlier reported profit disappointments. However, Rebirth has since experienced a significant resurgence, particularly after a strong launch on PC via Steam.
Hamaguchi seized the moment to assure the community that development for Final Fantasy 7 Part 3 is progressing ‘extremely well.’ He elaborated, ‘The game is shaping up nicely. A lot of the content is already playable, and the game’s direction and form are firmly set in place. Right now, the team is united around refining everything.’
Fans of the epic RPG trilogy have been eagerly seeking updates on the next installment since Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth launched in early 2024. Development for Part 3 reportedly began as early as June 2022, with Square Enix previously stating their aim for a 2027 release. Enthusiasm for the trilogy’s grand finale intensified earlier this year when the team announced that the story for Part 3 was already complete.
While still cautious with specifics, Hamaguchi did share intriguing details in another interview. He explained that the ‘key words’ guiding each game’s design philosophy were ‘reunion’ for Remake and ‘bonds’ for Rebirth. The third and final installment also possesses its own key thematic term, which Hamaguchi is currently keeping under wraps.
He elaborated on the development progress, stating, “We’ve got builds running where you can actually experience what that theme is through the gameplay. And we know where we’re going with it. It’s looking like it’s going in the right direction, and we’ll keep working on it and make it even better. So hopefully in the near future we’ll be able to reveal some of that.” Hamaguchi assured fans that this installment “is going to be the climax, the finale of the series.” He promised a “suitable finale, a really great send-off for the game,” designed to “please fans, will delight the fans of this much-loved series, and really reward everyone for sticking with us to the end. So look forward to that. More information in the not too distant future. It’s all in safe hands!”
Adding to the positive news, co-director Tetsuya Nomura also acknowledged the widespread calls for updates on both Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 and Kingdom Hearts 4. He happily confirmed that development for both titles is “progressing really smoothly.” As fans eagerly await, they can anticipate exciting details about how the Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 team plans to honor the original game’s iconic airship, promising they “will not cheat” on its depiction.
